I’m in a fantastic mood as I sip my coffee and eat a croissant given to me by a co-worker from Jamie Kennedy’s café! It is, in a word, delicious.
Mercury went into retrograde today and will remain that way for the next 3 weeks. Hold on to your pants! Or, should I say your electronics? A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. It’s not really moving backwards, it just appears that way. During retrograde periods, unresolved issues from the past tend to rear their heads.
Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings. Flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications start happening, glitches and breakdowns with phones and computers as well as modes of transportation. All of these arise, I believe, as a means of getting us to relax and go into the introspection mode. That is, after all, what Mercury retrograde calls for. When we ignore this, when we fail to do the REs — rewind, relax, reconsider, repair and rethink — that is when the trickster known as Mercury starts acting up.
In the past, I’ve had Mercury Retrograde experiences that included:
- Dropping my iPhone on the kitchen floor, shattering the glass.
- My iPhone just stopped working for no apparent reason (but I knew what it was)
- The hard-drive of my computer went on the fritz
- Communication issues: emails have been lost, misunderstandings…
…the list goes on!
The point is, Mercury in Retrograde is a time for reflection and if you’re not doing that, then Mercury will get your attention other ways, almost forcing you to sit down and relax. I’m going to make sure this time around that I take the time to reflect as required. Figure out what issues that have occurred that I really need to ponder. My favorite Astrologer Robert Ohotto says the only time he hasn’t fallen victim to any of Mercury’s tricks is when he’s spent the whole time on his meditation pillow. We can’t all do that for 3 weeks (although it might be nice!), but all of us can take some time every day for meditation and/or reflection.
Given that Mercury is in retrograde in Virgo this time, the issues that will come up most revolve around Virgo issues: holistic health, taking care of our bodies, reconsidering what we do for a living – all of these are at the forefront this time around. Virgo also happens to be the neat-and-tidy sign, so perhaps you can channel some energy into cleaning up your home and reorganizing things so you’re better prepared for a fresh start once Mercury turns direct.
While Mercury Retrograde is a great opportunity to reflect on your life and think about changes you’d like to make, the serious side of Virgo could generate some conflict between heart and head. The best way to deal with the confusion is to keep on sussing it all out, but don’t make firm decisions or put any plans into action until Mercury goes direct on September 12. Just ride the waves and take baby steps until things become more clear.
Around September 3rd, Mercury will be in direct alignment with the sun and things will start to ease up for those of us feeling the effects of the retrograde. Mercury goes direct on September 12th. For now, use the retrograde as an opportunity to energetically clear problems, pain or limitation you anticipate during Mercury retrograde.
