Me & my first baby – the day she was born

When does the soul enter our bodies? Is it at conception? Birth? Shortly thereafter? This is a question I’ve pondered for a while and thought I’d take to doing some research to find out what the consensus is.

In the book Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives, author Michael Newton says:

At some point before birth, the soul will carefully touch and join with the impressionable, developing brain of a baby…Depending upon the inclinations of the particular soul involved, the connection may be early or late in the mother’s pregnancy. I have had cases where souls timed their arrival at the last minute during delivery, but this is unusual. My findings show even those souls who join the baby early seem to do a lot of traveling outside the mother’s womb during her term.

Souls join their assigned hosts in the womb of the baby’s mother sometime after the third month of pregnancy so they will have a sufficiently evolved brain to work with before term…After birth, an amnesiac memory block sets in and souls meld their immortal character with the temporary human mind to produce a combination of traits for a new personality.

The channeled book Seth Speaks: Eternal Validity of the Soul says:

Various methods of entry are adopted by souls. If there is a strong relationship between the parents and the child-to-be, then the personality may enter at the point of conception if he is extremely anxious to rejoin them. Even here, however, large portions of self-awareness continue to operate in the between-life dimension.

Here’s my take:

We all choose our parents. Long before we were ever born, we made soul agreements with them about teaching each other lessons, growing, learning and loving together. In my experience, I’ve done readings for people whose babies have come through but have said they wouldn’t be joining their parents right away. So, the soul is committed, but doesn’t usually enter the body at conception.

Anyone who’s ever been pregnant before can attest that their baby has personality traits (easy-going, demanding, likes to sprawl out) even before they are born. Moms who have been pregnant twice or more can attest to the fact that their babies have different personalities, even in utero. That, to me, indicates that the soul spends time with his/her mom and family during the pregnancy, but also spends time on the “other side”. By the third trimester, the baby’s soul spends more and more time in its body, and at birth it is fully committed and here in all physical density.

My news

Wondering why I care about this subject? I am pregnant and due to have my baby on or around February 10, 2013. The 1st trimester has been equal parts kind and horrible to me. I’ve been exhausted, nauseas, moody, joyous, elated and calmer than I’ve ever felt. I carry a sense of inner peace that I’ve never felt before.

Cool! Participate in my baby poll! The person who guesses most closely to my baby’s birth date, time and weight wins a prize – a free intuitive reading. Either email me at lindsay@thedailyawe.com or leave your guess here in the comments. I’ll keep a running tally of everyone’s guesses and will contact the winner shortly after Baby C is born. Here’s the information to include:

Boy or girl?

Birth date:

Birth weight:

Of course, you might need to wait a few weeks after the baby is born for your free reading, but I promise you, I’ll deliver. (In more ways than one! Sorry, really bad joke…)

For now, I’ll still be around: blogging, doing readings, giving Reiki treatments. I plan to spend my year-long maternity leave  (yes, that’s what we get in Canada!) loving on my baby and expanding my intuitive and healing practice at the same time in order to be able to eventually be a work at home mama.

Thanks! No guess? But it’s like a baby shower game without the lame baby shower – you don’t even need to buy a gift to play along! 😉

Michael July 26, 2012 at 9:23 am

Naw…I’m so damn good it wouldn’t be fair to the others.

Anyhow I don’t want to eliminate the possibility of a gift. 😉

susan gale July 26, 2012 at 9:18 am

According to the Cayce Readings, the thoughts and activities of the parents during pregnancy determine the personality of the soul who chooses you. I believe the soul does not enter the body until the first breath, but does “hang around” the parents during and even before conception. My younger son had been with me since I had been a child!

Your peace comes from the one who has chosen you… well done!

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 9:31 am

Now that’s a very interesting theory. I love Edgar Cayce. Makes me wanna make sure all my thoughts and activities are awesome during the pregnancy so the personality is a good one! 😉

I don’t doubt that your youngest was with you since you were little! I think this one has been hanging around me for quite some time, too!

Billie July 26, 2012 at 9:27 am

a girl… I already told ya it is! 😉 I’m feeling about 6lbs and 3 oz and on Feb. 11th :)… that part is wishful… love ya!

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 9:30 am

LOL my Mom says “Wonder if Billie intuitively knows it’s a girl?”!” I said “Probably!” It’d be cool if baby shared your birthday! Thanks for playing. 🙂

Anne July 26, 2012 at 9:30 am

Fabulous!! Hooray! Oh, Lindsay, wonderful news! Congratulations and hugs! A year off is a dream, too…and a reiki baby, to boot!

Girl. 8lbs 6oz.

I think souls join that small body within three, four months- my two children were night and day…. One jumpy, one calm. One hamburgers, one fish.

I wonder if food inclinations have anything to do with that soul and what was – before? What are you craving? What can you not tolerate?

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 9:41 am

Thank you, Anne! I’m grinning from ear to ear!

So far I haven’t had ANY food aversions! I have been craving eggs & egg salad for breakfast, lunch & dinner, though! LOL I guess this little one likes protein!

I’m really looking forward to teaching this little one Reiki right from the start. I know kids can have awesome connections and healing powers because they’re not as ‘removed’ from the other side as we are!

Btw – good guess. I make big babies, and my family only seems to make girls! We’ll see!

Karen Carson July 26, 2012 at 9:44 am

Girl! February 4th, 7lbs 4 oz. 🙂

That is Liam’s birthday but I don’t wish his size on you lol (9lbs 4 oz!)

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 11:28 am

Thanks for sparing me a giant baby! 😉 February 4th..I know someone with that b’day. My childhood neighbor!

Janet July 26, 2012 at 9:55 am

i’m going to ‘intuitively’ (ha) say boy, 6. 8oz on Feb 9th 4:34am 😛

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 11:27 am

🙂 Thanks Janet! I really love your haircut in that pic…off to check out your blog!

Mireille July 26, 2012 at 10:04 am

Fantastic. I’ll guess boy, 7.9 oz. Feb. 9, 6.30 a.m. xoxoxo

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 11:26 am

Thanks! Love you Mireille!

Arlene July 26, 2012 at 10:25 am

Congratulations, I have never guessed correct to what a baby was going to be, girl or boy, but it is always exciting.

My guess is boy, February 13, 7lbs 6oz

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 11:26 am

Thanks Arlene! LOL Maybe your guess will be right this time! Guess we’ll find out in Feb!

Susan S. July 26, 2012 at 10:28 am

Congratulations! I am guessing a girl, born Feb. 12 at 7am, weighing 7 lbs. 3 oz.

I have read both of the books that you referenced as to when the soul enters the body. From my own personal intuition and experience, I don’t know.

But, I have an extremely gifted psychic friend who has worked in the medical field who has seen babies born with their little souls sitting by them, with a little cord attaching the soul to the body. She told me that sometimes when the newborn is going to have a big physical challenge, the soul may wait to join the body until the challenge is resolved.

When her own son was born, his soul entered his body the moment he shot out of mom, into the world. (She can tell this sort of thing; I can’t).

I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly.

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 11:25 am

Wow, that’s really interesting what your friend has seen. Does she have a blog? I bet she’d have some amazing stories to tell!

February 12th seems like a nice day to be born. 🙂

Susan S. August 2, 2012 at 10:16 pm

I think she’s taking a break from blogging to do some work on herself right now. She does have several amazing stories to tell. And I believe she has written down her story, and one day, I hope, will have it perfected and published.

Brandi July 26, 2012 at 10:39 am

What happy news, congrats!!!

My guess is boy, 8lbs 1 oz, Feb 8th ☺

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 11:21 am

February 8 is my “baby” sister’s birthday! One of my favorite days of the year! It’d be wonderful if they shared a day!

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Thanks, Brandi! 🙂

Vee July 26, 2012 at 10:39 am

Your baby is a boy born on 15 February at 9:30 pm and weights 6.1.oz., super intelligent and shy…

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 11:21 am

I wouldn’t be surprised if a child of mine is shy, that’s for sure! Super-intelligent would be wonderful! Thanks for guessing. I like his weight! 🙂

Vee July 26, 2012 at 10:41 am

The soul enters the body at the conception.

Julie | A Clear Sign July 26, 2012 at 12:55 pm

I’ll say a girl born on the due date (cause we don’t like AFTER!) and (my only semi-intuitive hit) 4:03am. 6 pounds 4 oz. Whenever it happens, I’ll wish you an easy delivery and and a healthy baby 🙂

I have no idea about the soul entrance but I will say I am SURE they are around a lot the last couple of months unless their bodies just spontaneously shake, rattle and roll. Which I seriously doubt 🙂 Mine displayed their individual preferences throughout the last trimester. Fred even banged to get out when we went to a very loud movie right before he was born, and he has sensory issues around extremely loud noises so I’d say he was in there protesting 🙂

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 4:05 pm

Did you ever tell Fred that story? That’s the kind of story I wish my mom would tell me – a memory like that is so cool!

I am CERTAIN they hang around a lot in the 3rd trimester, at least. Experience tells me so! I am looking forward to getting to know this one in the months to come. And thanks for guessing ON my due date and not after. I’d say 75% of guesses are AFTER! Noooooo!!!!

Julie | A Clear Sign July 26, 2012 at 8:27 pm

No, but I will someday when he might remember or appreciate it.
Usually 2nd babies come earlier and faster.

Jessica July 26, 2012 at 1:12 pm

7 lbs 5 oz

February 8th

btw Congratulations!

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 4:04 pm

Thanks, Jessica! You are a mom to boys, right? I think I remember you mentioning that! It would be a new journey for me, for sure!

Jessica July 26, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Yes actually I have identical twin boys, they are now eight. Boys are fun. 🙂 Hope you are having a wonderful summer.

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 4:59 pm

You are a busy lady! My dad was an identical twin. 🙂 Your boys must have a really special bond! I’m having a great summer & hope you are, too!

Mandy July 26, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Congratulations! This is such exciting news.

My guess is girl, Feb 13, 7 lbs 4 oz.

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 4:03 pm

I’m really digging your glasses. You look super cool. (No sarcasm, I mean it!). Thank you for your guess! <3

LunaJune July 26, 2012 at 1:59 pm

It would be easier for me to guess if I saw your belly… but

the feelings that come are

feb 7

6 lb 8 oz

as for souls entering I hadn’t given it alot of thought..

and for the amount of time that I leave my body.. some nights I let my soul out to wander like one puts out a cat for the night… it feels awesome inside this shell but knows it is much more than this…

I feel that I chose to even come before I was concieved… like something in my saw the future of the family I came into and chose to come in and add something, and change something.

May each day unfold with more excitement

and congratulations

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 4:02 pm

You do astral travel? Now THAT is cool! I’ve only ever done that once, and that was to meet my daughter when she was about 4-5 years old. It was one of the coolest experiences I’ve EVER had. Should write about it some time!

Thanks for playing and for the congrats! 🙂

Stacie July 26, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Congratulations! How exciting!

Boy, Feb 11, 8 lbs 2 oz

I am not sure on the soul/body issue. Watching the pregnancy waiting for my granddaughter to arrive… she most definitely was showing presonality about 5 or 6 months along. Feisty, kicking the snot out of her mom, absolutely did not like anything pushing in to her world so to speak…would kick the stethoscope off every time etc.

She’s an easy, happy baby but very active and fights sleep flinging her head/arms/legs. Definitely a little Dragon baby 🙂

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Awww, your granddaughter sounds like a sweet baby! When was she born? Dragon babies are awesome. Apparently mine is going to be born the year of the Snake! Sounds…not as cool as the Dragon! lol Thanks for the guess!

Stacie July 27, 2012 at 12:52 am

Hi Lindsay 🙂
She was born May 26 at 1:51pm. I’m glad she was born a Gemini instead of a Taurus like my son(her Daddy) LOL, although I think she’ll be just as stubborn anyway!

Snake is for wisdom, so he will be wise 🙂 I am a Year of the Dog, not as cool sounding as Dragon either.

Lindsay July 27, 2012 at 7:23 am

Gemini girls are fun! My niece is 5 years old and she’s a Gemini. She’s always been very verbal/ahead of the curve, entertaining and had a sharp wit! I think Geminis are good communicators!

Year of the Dog at least sounds loyal and sweet & loving. I don’t know much about Chinese Astrology. Off to Google!

Laura Warnke July 26, 2012 at 3:13 pm

Hi Lindsay!

Girl, February 14th, 4:03 pm, 8 lbs 1 oz.

As far as when a soul enters the body, I think they jump in and out early on during the pregnancy, spending more and more time with you the closer you get to your due date.

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Thanks for the guess, Laura! I would love a Valentine’s baby. <3 And I am in total agreement with you re: the soul and when one joins the body! No surprise there!

Elisabeth July 26, 2012 at 4:49 pm

What an exciting time in your life! I certainly hope that your baby doesn’t wait to arrive much later than your due date (my son really took his time to be born) but I am going to guess that you have a son on February 12th at 3:33 AM and that your baby weighs 8 pounds.

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 5:11 pm

LOL thank you for not putting your guess too far over my due date. Someone guessed February 19th! GULP! No thank you! I like the time you chose – 3:33 would be a great time to be born. Thanks for guessing!

Victoria July 26, 2012 at 5:12 pm

Hmm… now I am wondering about many things… See, I had Triplets!

We never really “bonded” during the pregnancy and afterwards was difficult also, to be a new mum, more than one to handle…. Always have kind of thought, “what the heck were “they” thinking, to pick me?”

Guess the date and weight? Feb 14 2013pm 6lbs 8oz

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 8:41 pm

Triplets! WOW. You are a brave, brave mama soul. I definitely think even your triplets chose you. Even during the tough parts. I’d be willing to bet part of their life lesson (yes, for all 3 of them!) is to learn how to share…time, affection, space, lessons, growth. All of it! And I bet you’re one heck of an awesome mom! 🙂

Jen Brunett July 26, 2012 at 7:45 pm

I’m soooooo excited for you! YAY!!!!

I’m totally not even guessing because i’m hideous at it. But yay yay yay!

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Awww, THANK YOU Jen! I’m super excited, too! Things are starting to feel more real now that I’m out of the sickness and heard the heartbeat, etc…

Mom/Mimi July 26, 2012 at 7:47 pm

My prediction is: 8 lbs. 8 oz. baby girl, 21 inches long born on 2/8/2013 at 5:55 AM. 🙂 ♥♥♥

Mark’s prediction: 14 lbs. 3 oz baby boy, 29 inches long born on 2/13/2013 at 3:30 AM. After 72 hours of labor! LOL!

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 8:39 pm

I like your guess a WHOLE lot better than Mark’s! 😉 I also think yours might be a bit more accurate! Great time to be born, eh?! 😀

Mom/Mimi July 26, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Yes! Are you sure you’re ready for a mini Hannah. LOL!

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 9:08 pm

NO. lol

Mom/Mimi July 26, 2012 at 9:10 pm

You can let me know after this weekend. Haha! Love you!

Carolyn July 26, 2012 at 8:12 pm

Congratulations, Lindsay!!! I a so, so very happy for you! You are going to be the absolute best momma! I’m going to guess that you are going to have a little fella! He’ll be born around 10 pm and weigh around 7 pounds… xoxo

Lindsay July 26, 2012 at 8:38 pm

At first I read that as a 10 pound baby! LOL Carolyn!! Your sweet words made me grin from ear to ear! That’s really awesome coming from you b/c it’s so clear to me that you’re an amazing mama! <3

Dylan Lin Calista July 27, 2012 at 7:43 am

Wow this is just beautiful 🙂

Congratulations! Seems like everything is falling to place and going great!

I hope you enjoy and savor every moment of your pregnancy. Life is a precious thing and to bring one into this world is a gift. 🙂

Lindsay July 27, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Thank you, Dylan! <3 I'm very excited. Seems to be a big lesbian baby boom around these parts. But then, that's probably because my friends and I are all in our early-mid 30's and it's just time.

Now that I'm not feeling sick anymore I'm starting to really enjoy the pregnancy. Have an awesome weekend!

Kathleen July 27, 2012 at 9:32 am

Congratulations! I’m guessing a boy just because… 6 lbs 13 oz, Feb 11, 2:31 am.

I think the souls are there at birth, with the first breath, that it “inspires” them.

I wish you a healthy and happy pregnancy and lots of good food (good for you on eating all that protein!).

Lindsay July 27, 2012 at 2:36 pm

Thanks, Kathleen! Yeah – the call of the egg keeps pulling me to it! That and fresh fruit. I’d say those are pretty good cravings to have! My midwife says we don’t need to keep track of my weight this pregnancy, so I’m opting out. That way I can eat as many egg salad sandwiches as I want without feeling guilty about weight gain! 😉

Thank you for your guess and adding your two cents to the debate!

Cheyenne July 27, 2012 at 9:56 am

Wow! Congratulations!! I love newborns!! I wish they stayed newborn a bit longer than they do!! Maybe that’s why I love making the reborn baby dolls that look and feel like REAL babies!! (some people think they’re super creepy but I love them!!) 🙂 I wish you the best pregnancy and my guess is:

Feb 14

8 lbs 1 oz

Lindsay July 27, 2012 at 2:35 pm

I’ve seen those reborn dolls…you make those?! Wow. You have an incredible talent and must have an eye for detail! They even SMELL good! I love those things and believe me, holding them really makes your biological clock ache!

That’s a great guess! A valentine’s day baby would be extra sweet! <3

Cheyenne July 27, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Valentines Day would be a great day for a birthday!! 🙂

Yes, I was told to get a hobby…then I saw “My Fake Baby” on BBC and it was ON!! I love making them! My office looks like a nursery now, ha ha. Sometimes my daughter will bring one with us to the store and people always say something about the cute little baby and we love to see their faces when we tell them its a doll!! 🙂

Lindsay July 28, 2012 at 2:31 pm

When my sister and I were little, we had a couple baby dolls that looked very real. I remember we used to take them to the mall/grocery store with our mom and people would stop us and ask how old the baby twins were! I guess you guys get the same thing with your dolls! Hilarious!

Ricardo July 27, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Lindsay, congrats on such wonderful site, and especially in this context, thanks for this forum. I will be as objective as possible here, but I agree with this take from Mother Mirra Alfassa: “… there is a stupendous difference between conceiving a child deliberately, with a conscious aspiration, a call to the invisible world and a spiritual ardour, and conceiving a child by accident and without intending to have it, and sometimes even without wanting it at all. I don’t say that in the latter case there cannot also be an incarnation, but it usually takes place later, not at the conception…” (http://auromere.wordpress.com/2011/04/27/when-does-the-soul-enter-the-body/). I do believe vehemently that the soul’s journey is highly individual, but according to my collection reading the sages, these are times in which old souls reincarnate for a last stay on Earth, in high percentages. Which means, many of these may be very much present in the physical realm very early after conception -and yet be able to keep their connections with the spiritual through life.

When my beloved Saffy cat died by accident, before expected, a vigil candle burned through and out for seven days. I learned (two months after) that that day, when the candle burnt, Saffee was born -who was meant to be my new kitty friend. All the references I was finding those days pointed out at the fact that right at that time there was a soul transfer, and I was simply returned (in a way) that which was still meant to be with me.

I am not sure that things work with such synchronism when it comes to human pregnancies and births, but I have a feeling that they do:-)

I have no clue at this point of whether you will have a boy or a girl, but my feelings are that your child[ren] will be highly talented, healthy, and loving.

Lindsay July 28, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Hi Ricardo!

I just love your Saffy story. It’s beautiful and such a wonderful thought about the soul transfer.

At this point I’m leaning more towards ‘girl’, but lots of people here seem to be guessing boy. So I guess only time will tell! 😉

Totally with you on more old souls/souls coming for their last incarnation coming in larger numbers. It will be very interesting to see what kind of soul this little one has. We’ll find out soon enough! <3

Jennifer July 27, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Congratulations, Lindsay!! Amazing news! 🙂 I’m SO thrilled that you get to have a year off, being with your baby love and doing what you love! That will be such a wonderful year, you will gain so much. <3

My father's birthday was February 8. 🙂

Lindsay July 28, 2012 at 2:33 pm

My youngest sister’s birthday is February 8th, Jennifer. The ways in which you and I have little connections keep coming up, I’m noticing! Thank you for your congrats! I am so excited and for once, can’t wait for February to get here. I usually hate that month b/c it’s in the very depths of Winter!

Meg July 27, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Hi Lindsay and congratulations on your new baby! I’ve just started coming to your site and LOVE it! I am trying to learn more about the spirit world and appreciate your writings so much…thank you.

My guess is: Feb. 6th

6 lbs 6 oz

6:30 a.m.

Lindsay July 28, 2012 at 2:32 pm

Hi Meg!

So glad you like the blog – I appreciate your kind words and hope you keep reading! I’ve got your guess logged. Thanks for playing along! 🙂

Lindsay August 10, 2012 at 7:14 am

Hi Haley!
